A closeup of two small glass jars with black rubber stoppers, about 3 inches in height. The jars, instead of their whole interior being the chamber that can hold material, have smaller, conical chambers within. The conical chambers hold blackened flecks of dried blood, and the spotlight above is refracted by the glass and winks like a star across the white pedestal on which the jars sit.
A still from a video. The artist stands in their studio, wearing black pants and a black cropped tank top. We see from their mid-torso down to their knees. Their hands hang limply at their sides.
A still from a video. The artist has made a cut in one thigh, a few inches above their knee. Blood begins to bead blackly along the straight, thin line of the incision. They're in the act of making the same incision above their other knee.
A still from a video. Both of the artist's thighs are cut. The artist is in the act of collecting blood from one of the cuts in a small plastic container.

Two glass jars; blood from the artist when they’d been an unraped person for the majority of their life; blood from the artist when they’d been a raped person for the majority of their life. 6″x6″x3″.

About

Created in conjunction with the performance accumulation: focet [sic], this blood was collected at the brink of an anniversary of rape. In the weeks leading up to the date, I became consumed with the question: what would happen when I slipped from a majority non-raped person to a minority? I felt compelled to gather evidence that I existed, that I would continue to exist.

In the process of collecting blood from each thigh, just before and just after the clock struck the time, I realized that question in and of itself lives in an essentialist space I don’t otherwise entertain. There was no need to gather proof of life, but, jarred now, its purpose is to remind. The blood is different, and it is the same. The vials are indistinguishable, even to me.
